Abstract

The swine industry in the United States is composed of approximately 6.01 million females that farrow more than 11.8 million times annually, producing 112 million piglets. Preweaning loss of piglets is a major problem confronting the swine producer. Approximately 15 to 25% of all piglets die during parturition and the first few weeks of life.1 Many of these deaths occur during parturition and the first 72 hours of life.2
