A primer to genome editing
Abstract
Genome editing, the process of introducing specific changes to a cell’s DNA, dates to the 1970’s. Early genetic engineering techniques include DNA microinjection, embryonic stem cell mediated gene transfer, and retroviral mediated gene transfer. The advent of engineered nucleases for genome editing, especially CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) have catapulted the field forward. In addition to widespread application of engineered nucleases in basic science, several genetically modified large animal models have been generated.
